The water jar (matka) is in the spotlight

a1a2a3Jodhpur, the water jar (matka) is the star of a new exhibition at the Desert Museum Arna Jharna at Jodhpur. From March 24th onwards, the public is invited to discover the history and the way the white water jar (matka) typical of our Jodhpur region is made. The Desert Museum Arna Jharna which we know the ethnographic richness proposes a new look at an object of our daily life. The museum has reconstructed a potter’s workshop where one of them works and shows the audience the traditional techniques for making clay pots. This new exhibition is the result of collaboration with a French researcher from the CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) and Rupayan Sansthan, Jodhpur. Ms. Valentine Roux came to investigate the diffusion of the kiln among the Muslim and the Hindu potters of Jodhpur region. This survey has been an opportunity to trace the little-known story of the white matka, also called the Mokalsar Matka, proper to our area and exported beyond the borders of Rajasthan stretching to Gujarat. This exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to rediscover the Desert Museum initiated by Padam Bhushan Komal Kothari and implemented by his son Kuldeep Kothari. It is expected to attract an audience of all ages in the beautiful location of the museum. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and waits for your visit!
