Diwali: From the Darkness of Ignorance to the Light of Self-Knowledge

India is a sacred land of festivals and celebrations. Every festival, celebrated here, introduces us to our rich culture, spiritual traditions, and values of life. Among all these festivals, Diwali holds special significance. Diwali is not merely a festival of lighting lamps, distributing sweets, and celebrating happiness, but a festival that inspires us to move from ignorance to knowledge, from impurity to purity, and from despair to hope.
The literal meaning of Diwali is a row of lamps, but its spiritual message is much deeper. Just as a small lamp removes darkness, the light of self-knowledge helps us to remove ignorance, fear, negativity, and vices from our life. The five festivals of Diwali—Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Diwali, New Year, and Bhai Dooj—provide many moral and spiritual messages for making life better.
Dhanteras: Purity Is True Prosperity
On Dhanteras, goddess Maha Lakshmi is worshipped for the attainment of wealth and prosperity. Generally, wealth is associated with material possessions, gold, silver, and comforts. But the real question is whether lasting happiness and peace can be attained in life through material prosperity alone.
If the mind is restless, relationships are bitter, and life is dominated by jealousy, anger, and dissatisfaction; external wealth also cannot provide complete contentment. From a spiritual perspective, purity, contentment, noble thoughts, and good conduct are the foundations of true prosperity.
This Dhanteras, let us not merely wish for an increase in wealth, but also take a resolution to purify our thoughts, words, and actions. A life filled with honesty, contentment, and self-respect is the true symbol of prosperity.
Naraka Chaturdashi: Victory Over Our Inner Evils
Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Kali Chaudas, inspires us to gain victory over evil and demonic tendencies. From a spiritual perspective, the vices within human beings, such as lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego, affect their mental peace and the sweetness of their relationships.
Anger weakens wisdom, ego increases distance in relationships, and greed keeps a person constantly dissatisfied. To overcome these weaknesses, external religious rituals alone are not enough; self-introspection and firm determination are also necessary.
According to spiritual knowledge the soul, in its original form, is peaceful, pure, and powerful. Therefore, when we stabilize ourselves in soul-conscious state and remember the Supreme Father, Supreme Soul Shiva, in His form of a point of divine light, we experience many inner powers.
On this festival, we should resolve to recognize and remove our weaknesses and imbibe virtues such as love, forgiveness, patience, and tolerance in our lives. This is the true victory over inner evils.
Diwali: An Opportunity to Ignite the Lamp of the Soul
Diwali is the festival of light. On this day, lamps are lit in homes, goddesses Lakshmi and Saraswati are worshipped, and people meet one another and celebrate with joy. However, the true spiritual significance of this celebration is to ignite the lamp of knowledge within ourselves.
According to our spiritual knowledge, I am not this body, but a conscious soul that controls and operates the body. The soul’s form is like a subtle point of light. The body is perishable, whereas the soul is imperishable. When a human being considers themselves only a body, body-consciousness, attachment, and various vices influence their thoughts and actions. Upon attaining self-knowledge, they begin to recognize their true form.
The Supreme Father, Supreme Soul Shiva, is regarded as the Ocean of Knowledge and the Ocean of Peace. Through Rajyoga Meditation, when the soul remembers the Supreme Soul and practices imbibing His qualities in life, it receives inspiration to keep the mind peaceful, make thoughts positive, and direct actions towards excellence.
Just as we clean our homes during Diwali, it is equally necessary to free the mind from old grievances, hatred, jealousy, and negative thoughts. Along with this, we should introspect and review the accounts of our lives. Do our words bring happiness to others? Is there love and respect in our behavior? Are our actions based on truth and honesty?
Igniting the lamp of self-knowledge along with the external lamps is the true fulfilment of Diwali.
New Year: Creating a New Era Through Elevated Sanskar
According to the Vikram Samvat calendar, the New Year is celebrated in many places on the day after Diwali. People exchange greetings, make new resolutions, and wish one another happiness and prosperity. However, the true meaning of the New Year is not merely changing the calendar, but also bringing positive transformation into life.
Today, the world is facing many challenges. Problems; such as corruption, violence, selfishness, and the decline of moral values; affect the peace of society. In such circumstances, merely expecting change from others is not enough. Real transformation begins with oneself.
The present time is the Confluence Age. It is an important period of spiritual awakening and transformation. At the present time, the Supreme Father, Supreme Soul Shiva, is imparting the spiritual knowledge and teachings of Rajyoga through Brahma as His corporeal medium. Through this, human souls gain recognition of their original qualities and receive inspiration to live an elevated life. In the spiritual goal of establishing the new world of Satyug, self-transformation and elevated actions hold special importance.
This New Year, let us make truth, love, peace, purity, and honesty the foundation of our lives. Let us remove our weaknesses, cultivate elevated samskaras, and bring positive transformation to our families and society through our actions. This is the true way to welcome the New Year.
Bhai Dooj: The Message of Spiritual Love and Universal Brotherhood
Bhai Dooj is a festival of pure love, affection, and respect between brothers and sisters. On this day, a sister welcomes her brother, applies a tilak to him, and wishes for his happy life. This family tradition contains a beautiful feeling of love and purity.
The spiritual message of this festival extends to the entire human family. All human souls are children of the Supreme Father, Supreme Soul. From the spiritual perspective, all souls are brothers to one another. When we rise above the differences that appear on the basis of the body and see one another as souls, feelings of respect, equality, and purity develop.
If we maintain good wishes towards every person, hold no hatred towards anyone, and give a place to spiritual love in our behavior, we can create an atmosphere of peace and harmony from the family to the entire world. In this way, Bhai Dooj is not limited only to the relationship between a brother and a sister, but also inspires the spirit of universal brotherhood.
Self-Transformation Is the True Celebration of Diwali
The five festivals of Diwali give us five important messages for life: true prosperity through purity, victory over vices, the light of self-knowledge, the creation of a new life through elevated samskaras, and the experience of universal brotherhood through a spiritual perspective.
Today, the world needs inner light along with external light. If every individual cultivates peace in the mind, purity in thoughts, and excellence in actions, positive transformation in the family, society, and the world becomes possible.
Let us resolve that this Diwali, we will illuminate not only our homes but also our inner selves with the light of knowledge. Through Rajyoga Meditation, let us remember the Supreme Father, Supreme Soul Shiva, awaken our spiritual powers, and resolve to live an elevated life.
Indeed, the journey from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge is Diwali. When the lamp of knowledge is ignited within the soul, a new dawn of peace, purity, and true happiness begins in life.
Om Shanti
