Father’s Day was started in the United States in the early 20th century to complement Mother’s Dayin celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. It was first celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA by Sonora Smart Dodd. She heard about Mother’s Day in 1909 and told her pastor. She thought fathers should have a similar day. Her father raised six children as a single parent. The local clergymen agreed to the idea of Sonora Smart Dodd and accordingly the first Father’s Day sermon was given on June 19, 1910.
Father’s Day is observed on the third Sunday of June. It honors all Fathers, Grand Fathers, Great Grand Fathers, and all Father figures for their contribution in upbringing their child and taking care for child’s comfort and well being.
Father’s Day is a time to recognize fathers and father figures who have influenced the life of their child in all walk of their life i.e. education, helping and guiding them in choosing their profession/ carrier, for teaching them that they should be always follow the law of land, family traditions, culture and helping others when need to be. Father is a Guide, friend and teacher in true sense. Contribution of Father in the life of the child is as important as the role of their Mother.
Now a day’s Father’s Day is celebrated through giving cards as well as gifts to them, Dining out with them, Thanking them for their valuable contributions, By giving several gifts such as electronic gadgets, sports attire, household tools. Sons as well daughters and younger one in general spend time with them and cherish the sweet memories. In real sense Father’s Day is a Day of paying Gratitude by sons and daughters to their worthy Father.
In addition to Father’s Day, International Men’s Dayis celebrated in many countries on November 19 for men and boys who are not fathers.

Father is the one person who can always make me smile? Even when I’m mad at him? Even when he makes me cry? Even when he makes fun of me or laughs at me.He is one of the people who has always been there for me, one who has always loved, cared, and provided for me. He is one of the two most important people in the world to me. Someone I LOVE with all my heart. He is my friend, my hero, but most importantly he is my…Daddy!!!
