INSTALLED IN MATERNITY HOSPITAL IN BHARATPUR
MACHINE WILL SAVE LIVES OF NEWBORN BABIES UNABLE TO BREATHE
Jaipur, Dec. 13: Infants unable to breathe at the time of birth due to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome will now be able to breath comfortably, thanks to a new neonatal respirator machine installed for the first time in Rajasthan at the Government Maternity Hospital in Bharatpur. This is the first-ever such machine set up in the State, which has been made available free of cost by Bharatur-based Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation.
The respirator, which has the facility to supply warm and moist oxygen to newborn babies, can cater simultaneously to two infants. The Lupin HW&R Foundation’s Executive Director, Mr. Sita Ram Gupta, said here today that the inability to breathe due to neonatal respiratory distress syndrome often leads to either the death of infants or their permanent disability due to a portion of brain stopping to function.
Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is a problem often seen in premature babies. The condition makes it hard for the baby to breathe and it generally occurs in infants whose lungs have not yet fully developed. Mr. Gupta said the Aprotech machine had been purchased from a Hyderabad-based company specially for the hospital in Bharatpur.
The representatives of the company imparted training in the machine’s operations to the hospital’s doctors and para-medical staff last week and also provided a documentary film to them for detailed guidance to work on it and resolve difficulties in running it.
The Bharatpur Chief Medical and Health Officer, Dr. Gopal Ram Sharma, also saw the operations of the machine and expressed gratitude to Lupin HW&R Foundation for donating it to the hospital. He expressed the hope that the respirator would render the gift of life to the infants facing respiratory problems and help reduce the infant mortality rate in the district.
