RAJASTHAN ON GLOBAL MAP OF HEALTH EDUCATION

jaipur-100x100Jaipur/ Rajasthan has achieved a pride of place on the global map of health management education with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health of the U.S. offering its Master of Public Health (MPH) degree programme in Jaipur in cooperation with the Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR). The course begins in October this year.            The students joining the prestigious course will get an opportunity to travel to Baltimore, Maryland, U.S., for a winter institute at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in January 2014. The first batch of 60 students will start their course at the IIHMR campus here in October this year.

The course is being offered to the Indian students as well as those from the low and middle-income countries. The IIHMR Director, Dr. S.D. Gupta, said here today that there was an overwhelming response and about 100 applications for admission have already been received from the Indian as well as students from the South Asian countries such as Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bangladesh.The curriculum of the MPH progamme is unique with blend of public health and management using course structure of Johns Hopkins adapted to the context of Indian and other developing countries. The courses will be taught by distinguished faculty from the Johns Hopkins and the IIHMR.  Dr. Gupta said the age of applicants varies between 24 and 50 years, indicating that it would be useful for the professionals of all age groups working in the field of public health management in the public and private sectors, NGOs and national and multinational organizations. The course is approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India under foreign collaboration. The degree will be provided by the Johns Hopkins University.

The MPH degree programme is being offered in the U.S. for over the last 60 years. Dr. Gupta pointed out that the cost of MPH in the U.S. was $ 57,000, against which the course is being offered in Jaipur at a cost of only $ 22,000.  The curriculum aims at developing the competencies of students in the core areas public health and management such as biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health science, public health biology, health management and functional management, social and behavioural sciences, public policy and ethics. It will also develop multidisciplinary skills among the professionals.

The candidates seeking admission in the MPH course must have bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of full-time health-related work experience beyond the bachelor’s or master’s degree, unless they have a doctoral degree.
