Evergreen Senior Center

A real tour to Exercise-In fact the lively life unit for all seniors.

Once again coming back to the Evergreen Senior Center, colonia, the seniors of Woodridge performing regular course of activities that fulfill their needs pertaining to physical mental and moral welfare.
Me being a participating member, am fascinated at the stamina and potential that the human body has to generate energy to perform, what the young and the old do at the same level.

Let us go to the morning exercise session that starts at 9:15 a.m. to end at 10:15 a.m with the instructor Diana. She starts a day with physical stretches using balls, stretch bands and weight lifting tumbles. In today’s session my attention was drawn towards the participation of two seniors members, one gentleman in front of me and the other lady besides me. The man Charlie, while I took his picture said that he’s 96 year old, born on December 8,1922. Being more curious to know something more about him he answered with accuracy and full confidence some facts of his life with a cheerful smile on his face. This is the inspiring fact of his life to be in the center practically every morning, and attend exercise group and then the music group as set on particular days.

The lady’s name is Petty whose picture I took next.

The lady had attracted my attention when she went by me whispering that she had to sign the attendance sheet. On her way back she said ‘You see I had already signed but I just forgot’

wow! Amazingly inspiring. I told her that we are all on the same road going through different experiences. To this she said “ I’m going to be 94 on 10th February. (Today is 8the Feb 2019). I was amazing at her frequency and confidence while exposing the facts about her participation in the activities at the center for 10 year. Ten years is a lifespan!

Coming back do the core exercise session my attention was drawn to both Charlie and Petty. I constantly observed them doing the stretches, the ball exercise following the instructors moves at their own pace. But worthwhile was their attempt to do so with zest.
The instructor Miss Diana, who moves with rhythm and Grace (as you see in the Picture), at times I myself fail to cope up with the non-stop moves and just give up for some seconds. But Charlie and Petty move in pace as per their capacity till the very end of the hour. Among the other active members besides me, Charlie and Petty, we have Lucy, Elaine, Sherry, Alma, Mariano, Anne, John Carroll, Joanne, Veronica, Bhirman Ropan and Gert. There are some more names I am sure that I have missed.

As compared to the lifestyle in States and in India there is a wide range of comparison and contrast. The youth after 18 mostly are independent, mentally trained to live by themselves efficiently, sufficing all the needs on their own, and when they are 65 they avail all the benefits of being seniors as these centers become their second home. I myself enjoy the morning that starts with the core exercises at 9:15 a.m. at this Evergreen Senior Center in Colonia.

It is a great boon and pleasure to enjoy these moments of life in the company of such lively members of Evergreen Senior Center, maintaining its liveliness with the proper guidance of Cynthia Ruzich, the senior coordinator, Diane Mantagas, the senior transportation coordinator skillfully who manages the transportation of all members in their own timeframe with the responsible and the dedicated drivers, who really have immense patience and sincerity to perform their task with dignity and take the members in all seasons and see that they reach their homes safely. I’m thankful to the Team who join hand in hand to make all this happen, and appreciate the service given to all the seniors here in the township of Woodbridge, This is in true sense the real service to Humanity. AMIN
