In our contemporary times, market forces have had a direct bearing upon the nature of the Arts. To appeal to the large audience of casual listeners, many musicians have been forced to dilute the purity of the ancient classical tradition of Indian music. In the process there has been a devaluation of the complex forms of Music in India, which have not succumbed to the mantra of mass appeal. The gems of melody, harmony and rhythm created by generations of dedicated musicians may gradually become extinct. There are very few styles of music left in this country today that have survived this onslaught. Dhrupad is one of them.
Over centuries, Dhrupad moved from the temple to the court. It evolved into a sophisticated form of classical music. However, through its journey, the form retained its pristine purity. It was closely guarded by families of musicians and handed down within the guru-shishya parampara. Amongst these families, the Dagar family is the oldest and most prominent, having kept this tradition alive for 19 generations. Due to their relentless efforts, we are fortunate to hear this majestic form of music rendered like it was more than 500 years ago.

The key to the survival of Dhrupad has been its guru-shishya parampara, which lends itself both to an undiluted teaching of the form, and providing support for a devoted and rigorous study by the student. Both of these are integral in sustaining the Dhrupad form.
After the abolition of the Princely States, this tradition faced a crisis as patronage that supported the gurukul system was withdrawn. Dhrupad was kept alive through
personal sacrifice and devotion of Dhrupadiyas. Today, if we are to nurture this exquisite and rare flower of our national heritage, it is imperative that institutions or individuals are forthcoming with their support and patronage. Visva Dhrupad Gurukul is a humble attempt set up by the famed guru, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and is now following the guidance of his successor and nephew the renowned Rudra Veena player, Bahauddin Dagar.
