Railways has set a target to double its freight traffic by the year 2024. For this, it has been decided to set up a Business Development Unit (BDU) at the zonal and divisional level.
According to the Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, Mr. Abhay Sharma, NWR is making changes in its working system to increase its revenue by doubling the freight traffic. For this, along with strengthening the freight system of traditional goods by railways, other non-traditional freight traffic will also be attracted. The Business Development Unit established at the zonal and divisional level will contact the businessmen and industrialists and make them aware of the attractive schemes of the Railways. Efforts will be made to convey to the businessmen that the freight from the railways is not only better and more reliable than other means of transport, but it is cheaper, also.
The Business Development Unit will receive proposals to increase traffic in constant consultation with businessmen to make freight transportation simple and accessible. Any proposal received from the trade industry will be analysed at the zonal level immediately and assistance will be sought from other zonal railways and railway boards, if necessary. The business development unit set up at the board level will take a decision within a week time frame from the receipt of such proposals.
Business development units have been established in headquarters of North Western Railway and Jaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions. This unit will consist of 5 officers including one senior officer each from Operations Department, Commercial Department, Mechanical Department, Engineering Department and Finance Department. At the Headquarters level, Chief Freight Transportation Manager (CFTM), Mr. Hiresh Mina and at the Divisional level Senior Divisional Operations Manager (Sr. DOM) will act as the coordinator in these units, which can be directly approached by businessmen and industrialists.
